The P80 is a FWD 2000 model, N/A automatic. Comfy, nice condition, somewhat boring.
The R is an ‘04 auto. The interior is in meh condition. Body is nice, runs and drives great... But the PCV system?
It leads me to wanting a PPI and a muchlower price.

Well if you want a manual wagon with a brand-new PCV system , I’m strongly considering putting my wagon up for sale once spring rolls around.

Compared to a Camry, no... But compared to the R? Yes.

“The P80 is a FWD 2000 model,”
Looks more like a V70 to me.

I love the thing, but I’m not really in a position where I can fix issues that come up, and I definitely can’t afford to have a shop do it. I feel like this should be owned by someone who can tackle everything themselves, or can eat the costs without sweating it.
Once I have a garage though... Manual-swapped R wagon will be the first project on my mind.

I feel like if anyone would understand my feelings here, it’s you.
I’m not 100% sure yet. It’s a ton of fun and if work things improve I’ll probably keep it. I just don’t want to dump a ton of money/time into it, or constantly stress over it potentially breaking down.

The world of dubious beaters, I know too well . You have several things not going in your favor.
1) It had a failure pretty much immediately after you bought it. At time of purchase, you had accounted for known issues and largely believed what the seller said. But now you have doubt in your mind and a bad taste in your mouth. My wife’s radiator fan failed almost immediately after purchase — but that only cost $125
2) You sprang for some expensive repairs/maintenance right away, almost the value of the gosh darn purchase price. You bought a cheap fun beater that shows to be not cheap. You don’t have gobbles of spare time or your own shop, and spending your winter wrenching in the condo parking lot is unappealing.
3) You do some pretty legit trips/treks. This thing may not inspire confidence or have the same intangible qualities as the Miata.
I spent ungodly amounts on my 2nd Tercel, and it never seemed to improve. I grew to absolutely hate it after my first 4-figure bill. And it was still a turd . It’s like, “Man, I could have gotten a HELL of a nice car, for the cost of this one plus all the repairs and parts so far.”

I’m not sure if this makes it better or worse, but I had the PO drive me around in the Volvo and he seemed perfectly comfortable driving it relatively hard. That makes me believe he may not have actually been aware of the clogged PCV.
I’m coming to the conclusion that I just got incredibly lucky with this particular Miata. It’s been through countless owners, it was totalled, service records are nonexistent prior to my ownership , mileage over 300,000... And yet it’s been perfectly reliable and seems to do better the harder I drive it.
And after that 2nd Tercel, you didn’t stop going after old Toyota’s! That’s how I know you understand

Hahah, the PO drove me around in the Tercel I bought too. I think that’s a bad sign. He probably kne w how to throttle it to give it the least amount of problems on your test drive :| :| :|
